Surveys of what Survivors want and need for healing

Why fill out a survey?

Although Compassionate Gathering specializes in making survivors safe community with their stories and often difficult lives, many survivors never feel comfortable coming forward and telling anyone what happened to them.  The trauma is too deep, too pervasive, to allow that.  It can take years for fear of retaliation to go away, and if the abuser is still alive and still free, we sometimes never feel safe telling anyone what happened.  Surveys are a way of giving survivors a voice in the healing process while maintaining anonymity.

The second goal is to empower survivors.

The third goal is to give professionals working with survivors feedback from survivors on what you want and need for healing.

These surveys are truly anonymous. We will not know your name and contact information unless you tell me.  People have filled out these surveys and have asked to hear from us without  that we really don’t know who they are.

If you want us to contact you, you have to give us your contact information or e-mail Virginia at compassion500@gmail.com.

How do I fill out a survey?

Two surveys are available online.  All you have to do is click on the links and fill out the survey online.

Who can fill out a survey?

Survivors can fill out these surveys, but family members can fill out the survey for a survivor who feels uncomfortable or is otherwise not able to fill out a survey.  There is a place to designate whether or not you are a family member.

Can I help make the surveys more available?

It costs at least $400 per survey to put them online in interactive format.  All the money to post these survey has been provided by Virginia from her own resources.  We appreciate any help you can give us to help us post the survey for survivors of many forms of abuse online.

What will be done with this information?

1.  All information will be kept confidential unless you choose otherwise.  I will never know who you are unless you tell me.  If you choose to participate in some of the options for healing (ie. setting up an emergency fund for survivors), your identity will only be known to other people participating in the same project.  No identifying information about you will be shared with anyone.

2.  Mandy Davis,  a senior research assistant and adjunct instructor in the Graduate School of Social Work at Portland State University, will help me analyze the results statistically.

3. This statistical analysis will be presented to  organizations to educate them about what survivors want and need for healing.

4.  The media will also be informed of the results of this survey .
